For all non-nuclear submarines, maximum submerged speed is attained by, essentially, "dumping" the battery to the propulsion motor. Endurance at maximum speed is typically one hour or less. Hence, submarine skippers must be very careful in how they use this capability. If they use it to overtake a target, there will be less to escape counterattack.
For long-distance transits in non-threat environments, AIP submarines will most likely operate surfaced or at snorkel depth using atmospheric oxygen to burn their diesel fuel. They would not want to consume their AIP plant's oxygen during this time.
