I see someone already addressed this, but, Carl Vinson was not an admiral, he was a US Congressman from Georgia. John Stennis was not an admiral, he was a US
Senator from Mississippi.

I for one would not like to see a ssn or for that matter any other vessel named the U.S.S.Massachusetts like the current trend is, "Big Mamie" the
BB59 is doing nicely in her deserved role as a museum and a state memorial

I DO have a dogmatic objection to naming a multi-billion dollar defense asset that may have to last for 50 years after a politician. To me the largest ships
SHOULD be named after famous ships or battles or even certain concepts central to our country ("USS Independence", "USS Liberty", etc). I
suppose one could cover two bases by using "USS Franklin" which honors the man and CV13. No more congressmen, senators, SECNAVs, etc no matter how
much political clout their buddies have. We have destroyers for naming after people, keep the big ships "special". Just the voice of one calling in
the wilderness.

But, I ll still want to see a USS Franklin or Saratoga. |
