Currently they have the Super Lynx and Future Lynx work, the VXX work, the Algerian and Japanese AW101, several UK upgrades and AW149 work going on. In its results, Finmeccanica confirmed for the first time that it signed a contract, in the second half of 2007, to sell six AW101 helicopters and four Super Lynx 300 helicopters to Algeria for a total of 402 million euros. Started about 6 months ago in point of fact, and due to fly next year. Of the many programs under threat, Future Lynx is one of the least under threat given that it is very low risk (controlled spiral evolution of an existing platform) and at a comparatively low cost for the capability provided. Also, the capability provided to the Army (essential 'hot n' high Dessert Lynx') is needed in the near future and the MoD is hardly going to run the risk of backlash associated with scrapping a project which is clearly intrinsically linked to current operations.

The Super Lynx has been ordered by Germany (seven) and South Korea (13) and Germany and Denmark are upgrading their Lynx helicopters to Super Lynx standard. The first Super Lynx for Germany was delivered in July 1999 (for service on the Type 122 and Type 123 frigates), for Singapore in December 1999 and for Denmark in November 2000. The naval Super Lynx is a multi-role helicopter for anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue and utility operations. Over 200 naval Lynx helicopters are operational with 11 navies and are battle proven in several major conflicts including Operation Iraqi Freedom in March / April 2003. Over 200 Lynx scout / attack helicopters have also been produced. The Super Lynx 300 has been ordered by Malaysia (six), South Africa (four for the Valour Class Meko A-100 frigates), Oman (16) and Thailand (two). The Malaysian Navy was the first country to receive the Super Lynx 300 in September 2003 and all six were delivered by July 2004. The Royal Air Force of Oman received its first Super Lynx 300 in June 2004. Two helicopters were delivered to the Royal Thai Navy in September 2004 and entered operational service in February 2005.

I was under the impression that the FLynx is a reconnaisance platform, with some capability to operate FASGW - which means that the AH7/9 utility choppers could still remain in service. I.e. is this an enhancement to current capability or a substitute?

Posts: 209 ( 3-Apr-2008 17:30:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	the AH7s are mainly upgraded AH1s going right back to service entry. old. 9's are also mostly Mk 1/7 conversions i think. the way the aac is going, it will have its 30-40 FLynx (AH10 ?) at dishforth and the Apache fleet at wattisham. plus some replacement for comms/TA gazelles still in use - but these will be non deployable, e.g. squirrel or something similar. ops have shown consistently that lynx is not an effective people mover, puma/sk/merlin are about the minimum to carry a sensible payload/people over a sensible distance, lynx is used more in the recce/escort, airborne c4istar and at most, deployment of very small teams or key personnel. good for quick casevac also. with TI sensors lynx fulfills its main role of tactical airborne istar. cancelling it might not be the end of the world, Westlands did have a RTM322 Blackhawk years ago and having a common engine across UH, AH and Merlin cant but be good for logistics in JHC. but that would probably be more expensive, and crushing to westlands.

Starviking Well, there are the 3 new, but unwanted Brunei frigates, the 5 unmodernized Type 23s and the 4 Type 22 Batch 3s, all potentially available for foreign purchase.
