What you may not know is that in WWI when the Germans fired up their AA guns the word came down that the Ack Acks were firing. Although the words Ack Ack were not in the phonetic dictionary thats what was said.

It appears to me as an urban myth since the german word "FLAK" traces down to world war one... Was "ACK ACK" ever used by germans in such a content?

So the allied troops said the germans were firing their Ack Acks?

A - Ack was standard until the British and US alphabets were merged during WW2 Table of Phonetic Alphabets

For instance, Talbot House was known as Toc H in Signalese (not the same as Senegalese)... Sir Humphrey: Minister, Britain has had the same foreign policy objective for at least the last 500 years: to create a disunited Europe. In that cause we have fought with the Dutch against the Spanish, with the Germans against the French, with the French and Italians against the Germans, and with the French against the Germans and Italians. Divide and rule, you see. Why should we change now when it's worked so well?

However I was going out in 58 so I really did not spend much time on it anyway:-) I wasn't the only one that did not get it either by the time I go out. Old habits are hard to break.
