Gentlemen,
what´s the correct british/american term for "Sperrbrecher". I´m referring to a ship (often a former merchant) that got filled up with hard to sink
stuff like empty barrels and is used to guard traffic in or out a harbour where mines are expected.

german-navy.de calls them pathfinder and pathmaker.
The fact that you needed to know was not known at the time that the now known need to know was known, therefore those that needed to advise and inform the Home Secretary perhaps felt the information he needed as to whether to inform the highest authority of the known information was not yet known and therefore there was no authority for the authority to be informed because the need to know was not, at that time, known or needed.

Not a direct translation
but based on function? Obstacle breaker is a semi literal translation however I've seen "Mine Bumper" used - though half joking. also "Mine Destructor" For a view from the other sie, see this article about British counter measures to some forms of the Sperrbrecher anti sperbrecher mines

While the primary objective of Minesweepers was to detect Mines and disable them, there was another concept of protecting ships against mines: To create a safe passage through a minefield by using a special ship that sails in front and detonates the mines before they can harm a much more valuable ship. The ships used for this task - the Pathmakers (or German: Sperrbrecher) had to be very robust to withstand mine explosions. By 1940 the magnetic mines were the biggest threat for ships entering or leaving their bases; laid by aircraft during the night they could cause severe damage when staying undetected. Therefore the Pathfinders were equipped with a VES-System, basically a huge magnetic field generator that could explode magnetic mines in a save distance" |
