If your country was looking for an excellent light attack type with substantial fighter capabilities on the side, the F-4E was a very good acquisition. If your country needed a fleet air defense fighter, or an air superiority fighter, the F-14, F-4J, F-4K, F-4M, or F-15 were better offerings. The F-4E was intended to fight in NATO's central front. In that context it was an outstanding fighter - bomber. AIRCENT had plenty of front line air defense fighters, F-15s, Mirage IIIs, F-4Ms and Ks and lightinings. AIRCENT needed a good light attack type that could fill in as a fighter. The A-7s, F-104s and Jaguars were not up to both rolls, although they were excellent light attack types. The F-111 despite its F is not really much of a fighter. Call it a medium attack type with fighter capability on the side. |
