Being a "long time listener, first time caller" on this board, and after having just finished watching Jeff Wayne's excellent stage show, I would
like to throw this one open to the board. Faced with 5-6 Martian fighting machines, what type/ class of warship would you choose to engage them? Bearing in
mind the suceess that Thunderchild/ Polyphemus had, would a lightly armed high speed vessel be of preference, or something with multiple heavy artillery?
Sir Humphrey: Minister, Britain has had the same foreign policy objective for at least the last 500 years: to create a disunited Europe. In that cause we have fought with the Dutch against the Spanish, with the Germans against the French, with the French and Italians against the Germans, and with the French against the Germans and Italians. Divide and rule, you see. Why should we change now when it's worked so well?

It would need high angle guns to hit those tripods...

How about an Atlanta or Omaha?
Or, stretching things a bit, Space Battleship Yamato? Charley aka Desert Sailor |

If over the horizon isn't available (Heat rays are direct line of sight) then something with homing torpedoes acurate enough to hit the legs.

A Star Destroyer. I do not believe that the tripods could hold up well against their ion cannons.

Submarines could be good - water would probably protect well against 'heat rays'.
The subs would probably have to try and ram the tripods, or surface and use guns. Of course, given the technology of the time the tripods could probably outmanouver them. Another alternative could be a low-draft gunboat with armour over the areas not protected by water. They'd be short range - just sallying forth when walkers are spotted, so bunkerage could be cut. Weapons - given the targetting problems - i.e. shell splash being not much use when the body of the target is tens of meters above the water, they'd be better with direct-fire weapons. Maybe elevated guns, sited behind an armoured bridge, for protection. The guns would be elevated because they'd be engaging the tripods at close range and thus the body would present a good target. There might be scope for an indirect weapon like a mortar, but the stabilisation issue would probably nix that. However, a fleet of Thunderchilds would do a good job on their own. Thunderchild got cut down after killing one tripod of three. An even match could have wiped out all three tripods. Starviking |

Realistic answer: Ohio class SSBN. A single MIRV warhead with five 20-kiloton warheads should provide sufficent heat to destroy all of the Martian flying
machines.

Come on folks, enough of this nonsense. This forum resides within a board that lives within a website firmly rooted in historical and current technology that
really exists. There are plenty of fantasy forums throughout the internet where it would be more appropriate. There have been plenty of flights of fancy on
this forum, but the great majority of them have at least started upon real technology, not fantasy nonsense. There have also been many threads that have also
been humor based, but even they are generally rooted within reality that is pertinent to this forum. Please take this somewhere else.
Okay, I feel better now and as BOBC would say NUFF SAID. I will go back to my lurking and only post when a subject comes along upon which I feel qualified to speak. |
