Registered Member Posts: 144 ( 4-Mar-2008 23:29:32) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Seems a bit unrealistic to me, especially the given speed of 30 knots for such a heavy vessel, which is most likely much heavier given the scale of protection in this design. Most likely such a ship would be too heavy to move at all, unless nuclear powered, with almost three times the reactorpower of the three times smaller Nimitz class ships of today.

Registered Member Posts: 2 ( 9-Mar-2008 16:56:36) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Even within the far-out there parameters, these two efforts go far beyond the point of diminishing returns and into redundancy; the competition where the naval architects thought up this must have had the absinthe flowing thick and fast. Let us leave aside for a moment reality, and being able to build the ships, let alone dock them, service them or allow them to enter any ports. 4 20" triples - fair, but twins would give a bit of weight saving, crew saving and possible increases in firepower. This was the epoch of reducing the number of launchers for increases in magazine capacity. 36 6" - More efficient to go for a maximum of 12 twin 5", and allow for improved arcs of fire, controllers and rates of fire. 120 3" - Far too many. 32-48 would be the maximum, even on such an oversized hull. 40mm and 25mm - Waste of space. A couple for junk bashing, perhaps, and some sort of light automatic weapon such as the proposed 35mm. But not hundreds of redundant light AA guns. The armour is way too much overkill. It comprises far too great a percentage of the design weight, and can be considerably trimmed to bring this somewhere closer to something called reality. Armour belt - Far too much, far too thick to be made, and going past the point of diminishing returns from armour thickness. Torpedo bulkhead - Far too thick to be of use, and obsolescent anyway. Gun armour - Far too much, and yet not nearly enough to defeat the weapons that the Soviets could put up against such a ship. Armour deck - This takes up a very large amount of weight, and again, is still insufficient. 8-12" all up would result in significant savings. CT - Too much, and the use of CTs is something to debate Engines - Too much power, as said, and too high a speed. No miscellaneous weight makes it soon obsolete in the 1950s. With a bit of realism, you could hack this down to 100-120 000 - still far above anything doable, but a more sensible exercise.

However, the turret armour, conning tower armour, torpedo bulkhead and belt are not only hugely redundant in terms of overkill, but are also beyond the point where thicker armour can be made to greater effect. Plates over 16.1" do not give great advances in protection and I am given to understand in some cases, they are actually less effective. There is no demand for single 25mm mounts, let alone in such numbers. Similarly, the 40mmhas been superceded at this time. For a ship this size, one could envisage keeping half a dozen for junk bashing, and putting some form of DACR on there in the 35mm range; perhaps 8-12 of those at maximum. 24 5" is the optimum; going for more than 6 mounts each side is simply crowding things up, making it easier to take out several mounts with a single bomb hit, and not allowing the best angles of fire. 3" numbers are a bit more realistic, but if one follows the maxim that less is more, then 16 twin 3" mounts for a total of 32 guns will allow greater magazine capacity, angles of fire and overall coverage. This reduction in armament allows a reduction in crew size. Remember, you will not be firing broadsides as such in the 1950s; there will be other missions for this ship. So, reduce the armour and guns even further. Next is the basic dimensions. The draft is very big, to the extent that the ship would have a limited amount of places where it could dock - mostly fjords. Reduce that to something a bit more realistic, such as 32-36. The extra length is basically going to waste, and limiting what dry docks can take her. You've got about 100 feet that are not necessary to take the main armament. The beam is very wide, and can be reduced to 124-135, as an experiment. This in turn gives us a lighter hull. Decrease the cruising speed to 12 knots. Make the powerplant a more fitting one for the US - the typical steam plant driving 4 shafts. You will end up with a smaller, different ship. It may have the capacity to go a bit faster, as being able to operate at fleet speed is of use; also, the benefits of the transom stern will start to kick in at higher speeds. Reducing crew size and cost is important.

Estimated 3-shafts, 12 MAN double-acting 2-stroke 9cyl diesels, 165,000shp = 30kts for original 1936 design added with 33% = 4-shafts, 16 MAN double-acting 2-stroke 9cyl diesels, 220,000 shp = 32kts Armament The ship is designed for long-range and short to medium range gunnery. Number of guns and the calliber is less relevant to the fireingcylce and penetrating power of the warhead. The phylosophy of guns with high ammunition capacity is needed. Gun is 406mm/57 (bore length 55 caliber) firing 1300kg(2862lbs) projectiles at 890m/s to 52km. The gun penerates 10" US Class B horizontal armor at 30km, and 390mm vertical improved KC at the same distance. Estimated fireingcycle can be as high as four rounds a barrel a minute, over twice as fast as contemporary designs. Arrangement is two superfiring twins both for and aft in the typical German spacious and comfortable twin gunhouse, like in all battleshipdesigns. The 42m beam also allows very high radar mast, fitted on her mainmast, aft of the second funnel. Superior optical German firecontroll is again fitted for medium and short ranges. With 1% hit chance of a battleship-sized target over 35km, the ship would be able to score an average 16 hits over an hour, and would be able to keep firing for almost four hours. Secondary: 24x 130mm (5,1inch) Dual Purpose guns in twelve twin mountings, six on either side. These guns are very simmilar ot the French ones used in Dunkerque en Le Hardi, but longer in gunbarrel. 5.1" 60cal is thought of, given its primary role as AA gun and lesser against surfaced targets. It is semi-automatic and fires up to 20 rounds a minute a barrel. (shells: HE = 70.8lbs / 32.1kg, SAP = 70.8lbs / 32.1kg, AA = 64.9lbs / 29.5kg) Placed in four groups on each counrer of the superstructure in rows of three each. Between fore and aft group is a raised armored deckhouse, extending to the side of the hull for the torpedomountings and reserve magazines. Medium AA: 20 sextuple 40mm Boforsmounts in blast-proof electrically operated mountings and 20 open powered twinmountings on the higher superstructure and stern. (160 barrels of 40mm bofors) Light AA: 24 power operated enclosed quadmountings for 20mm Flak. 24 additional open twinmountings on the superstructure and up to 80 easy to mount open singles for use on the vast deck. (144 + 80 x 20mm barrels) Torpedoarmament: 2 quinteple torpedotubes of 21,7" / 550mm. Midships in armored deckhouse with 300mm roof and 150mm sides. Magazines holds up to 10 reloads each. Alternate warhead is with amatol explosives up to 500kg, (1100lbs) type G7A-mod40. This weapon has up to 20,000 yards range and carries a powerfull warhaed to do some real damage to hostile ships. Amatol is impoverous to fire, and is considered save to storage. Aircraft: two trainable catapults on the stern in US fasion with two Ar-196 floatplanes plus one normally stored between the catapults = 3 aircraft. One large crane as in US BB's on the stern, flanked by two guntubs for twin 40mm guns. No hangar, aircraft stored on the catapults and deck. Vertical protection: External Belt is 50mm decapping plate + 360mm inclined at 15 degrees. Belt extends to the bottom of the ship and reduces in thicknes to 300mm + 50mm decappingplate. Barbettes 400mm face-hardened, with 50mm decapping plate above the weather deck (below it the shells are decapped either by the weather deck or the upper belt). Secondarry barbettes are only 80mm above armored deck, splinter only below. 300mm upper belt to the weather deck. Rest of the upper belt weight represents additional underwater belt. Torpedobulkhead is a continuous 80mm bulkhead up to the armored deck plus additional layered bulkheads below the main belt. Foreward and after bulkheads are 300mm and lock in on ends of main armored deck and belt. Horizontal protection 80mm bomb/weather deck. Main armored deck is 200mm.(210mm over mag.) Quarterdeck is 200mm to protect propulsion and steering. Tappers downward between inner and outer hull. (as in all contemporarry designs) Additional boxprotection on the magazines include a 100mm roof, side and bottom for the main magazines. Besides this, absorbtionlayers of polymere isolation is placed on the underside of all decks, to prevent shrapnel and splinters from comming through the steel. CT is unarmored exept for some splinter bulkheads and only the rangefinders are actually armored themselves with some 300mm sides and 100mm roof and botom. Bulges fitted are liquid based and filled with narrow tubes to absorb explosions, before this force reaches to the main hullarmor. Bulges cover ship some 200 meters below waterline mostly and cover all the vitals of the ship. This covering protects the hull against muiltiple torpedo and other hits underwater, making her as good as impossible to sink with traditional weapons of the day. Tripple keel of 20mm steel and liquid innerspace protect the bottom of the ship. Main armament turrets: 500mm + 50mm decappingplate face and foreward roof, 320mm + 50mm decap.plate sides and rear, 240mm + 50mm roof. Secondary gunturrets: splinterprotection only. Displacement: 68,490 t standard; 74,800 t normal; 81,120 t full load Dimensions: Length (overall / waterline) x beam x draught (normal/deep) (984.52 ft / 974.41 ft) x 137.79 ft x (39.37 / 41.19 ft) (300.08 m / 297.00 m) x 42.00 m x (12.00 / 12.55 m) Complement: 2,254 - 2,675 Hull form characteristics: Hull has a flush deck, A bulbeous clipperbow and a transom stern 'Natural speed' for length: 32,05 kts Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is excellent Room for accommodation and workspaces is cramped, due to inclining belt and tappering armored deck. Bulges are not excessable to crew, since not actually part of the main hull. Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform Good seaboat, rides out heavy weather easily General apearance: Typical German look as in H-Class BB'design, or a twin funneled Bismarck, except for the aircraftarangement on the stern, simmilar to USS North Carolina and successor classes.

Do I leave the maximum speed as is or decrease that also? I will reduce the secondary armament to 24 5"/54-caliber guns and the tertiary battery to 16 twin 3" mounts. For those DACR mounts you mention, do I keep them as quads, or go with twins? What are your recommendations as to how I reduce the draft and the beam? Mike Garrity

Simply reduce the beam and draft on your figures, as well as cutting the armour. Regarding the H-class mod, I'd swap the vast amounts of 40mm for 3"50 or better, to allow for more effective performance. The 20mm is also redundant, even in quad mounts, and can be replaced by less of a 30mm or 35mm gun system. For 1950, surface torpedoes on a BB and fixed wing aircraft are a bit out of kilter
