500 workers, not 100. Severomorsk apparently decided that 1000 workers of 1300 should rather work on subs for the Russian Navy.

This is actually better for India in the long run, as their shipyard workers and engineers will be more familiar with Vikramaditya (ex-Gorshkov) before she
enters service than they would have been with the Russians doing all the work.
This will pay off in later refits and in general operational servicing. |

Isn't the best solution for India to reject Russian request for additional founds for finishing this carrier, buy more harriers or AV-8 for Viraat and wait for new ADS carriers? Additionally Russian probably would be charged with breach of contract. Buying goroshkov with mig-29K India is choosing aircraft rather inferior to the F/A-18E, Rafale and F/A-35 available in the nidle of next decade. Also rebuilding of goroshkov is risky. Knowing Russians, it is very possible that after two years they will request another 1bln$. |

India ought to try to build their own carrier. They could join CVF project and build one in India.

Having actually spent time on an Indian Warship at Sea, I can tell you this much they could'nt tell the difference between a new, well kept or anchient
decaying peice of junk. The Indian Navy is in pritty poor condition. They have manpower to spare and most of the maintenance that will be required on Kittyhawk
is well within the Indian navies manpower and training capability. They see a whole they just patch it with paint, if its dirty they just leave it.
But I seriously doubt that the US would sell a Carrier to India, especially while there is still a Pakistain issue. which there always will be. I think there is probably a good reason India went with Russian kit in the first place. |

The USN would SINKEX the Kitty Hawk before giving it to India... or better yet give it to the Royal Navy.

Algeria is complaining about some aircraft that they bought from Russia.
Russia Suspends Fighter Delivery And it is not only India and Algeria who are having problems with Russian gear. I saw the quote from Gates that the US was not considering selling/giving Kitty Hawk to India. I could well imagine many American arms manufacturers who would be pleased if the US did. The US Dollar is going through some medium to long term depreciation of a material amount. The Euro is going through the roof. The Indian economy is doing very well thank-you. American gear is more affordable than it has been. A lot of Indian defence personnel would be pleased to be using American gear. the Russian gear is not cheap if it does not work. The Russian gear is not cheap if it does not last. I believe that the Russian equipment tends to be expensive to maintain. The American economy will slow. American manufacturers will be actively seeking export opportunities to replace American consumers. It would be surprising if the USA did not expand her already large arms exporting business. Indian manufacturers are relatively well protected from export competition. That may change. Russia has not got many satisfied customers. Russian gear is going up in price. After sales service is patchy, and no, they do not refund.

The irony is that I bet plenty of the those Eastern European workers will be heading to the UK to help make up the skills / labour gap on the CVF builds.

India is one of the few places it is still economical to scrap a vessel.
