With the recent news that terror suspects were spotted running around the Lake District playing paintball and decapitating melons (yes really) I'm wondering why we have forces in Afghanistan fighting and taking casualties from the Taliban.
The reasons we entered the country are well known- training ground for Al-Q and hiding place of Osama, in other words if we are to prevent further terrorist attacks against the UK and UK interests we need to eliminate Al-Q in Afghanistan and deny the place as a training ground to people who would conduct terrorist attacks here in the UK.
However, there have been a number of terrorist attacks, some succesfull, some not, since 2001 in the UK, but as far as I'm aware these have been
conducted by UK born and raised terrorists, not people trained in Afghanistan. With the news that terrorists have been training right here in the UK, what is
the current justification for UK forces fighting in Afghanistan?
Have there ever been any instances of Afghans mounting terrorist attacks against us in the UK?
It strikes me that genuine concern for UK security would drive policies aimed at domestic security such as proper border controls and genuine efforts to
integrate muslims into the UK mainstream. However these would require a radical change of thinking by our political and media elites and a reestablishment of a
degree of UK sovereignty that flys against current elitist thinking towards the EU.
The cynic in me thinks that sending our soldiers to fight and die in Afghanistan in the name of "UK Security" is a far easier response to the call to
"do something" about terrorism than challanging decades of soft thinking here at home by the political elite.
Afghanistan and Iraq are also very useful tools to drive real world defence cuts as major equipment programs can be questioned as "not required for
current ops". Even people who should know better are repeating this flawed mantra these days.
At the same time there is a tendency to self censor discussion of our purpose in Afghanistan while our forces are out there taking casualties? Our forces
are there to protect our values, one of which is freedom of speech and expression. I'd remind folks that even in the darkest depths of WW2 Churchill faced
confidence motions in Parliament and the existance of a "loyal opposition" was never questioned. We can support our forces (I have a nephew out
there) whilst questioning the politics of why they are there.
So, why are we in Afghanistan?
