Many thanks for the corrections. I have long believed that they carried SM-2 ER missiles with longer range than the missile types carried by AEGIS ships, but obviously I have been mistaken. Impressive ships nevertheless.

The ERs don't fit on those launchers, nor into the magazines.

Any plan to replace SPQ-9A with SPQ-9B ASMD radar? | ||

Is there any plan to replace SPQ-9A with SPQ-9B? It would improve the Kidd's capability against sea-skimmers significantly.

Where'd the SPS-48 go? What replaced it?

As a former Kidd class DDG sailor, I can tell you that we carried the SM-2MR. The ER bird was shot from the MK10 launcher found on Leahy, Belknap, and Long
Beach class CG's and Coontz class DDG's. The New Threat Upgrade added the SPS-48E and SPS49 air search radars plus SYS-2 which allowed the ships to use
a mid course guidance system that gave the missiles greater range because of a more fuel efficient flight profile. The Scott was the NTU test ship from '88
to '89 and reported aboard her in August of 1989 so I got to witness the final phase of the tests. Very interesting stuff, we managed to knock down at
drone without using an illuminator for the missile's terminal phase by using the targeting data from the SPS-48 data alone. I know they are all in Taiwan
now because I worked on both the 1803(Ex-Kidd) and the 1805(Ex-Chandler) while they were in Charleston, SC for overhaul. Even got to spend 4 days underway on
1805 for a proof firing of both gunmounts in July 2006. Brought back a bunch of memories, both good and bad! The big questions is can the Taiwanese keep all
four in working order and I am thinking no because Taiwan is a poor country.

I believe that the Kidds are armed with RIM-66K-2 (Standard Missile SM-2MR Block IIIA NTU version). The Block IIIA seems to be the favored export version. Most
of the USN's SM-2MR have been upgraded to Block IIIB. Block IIIB standards have
Error striken out.

maintain those 4 ships in a highly ready state if they really commit to do so. But Taiwan's commitment to 'garrison state' type high defense
spending seems to be slipping somewhat, for example they didn't appropriate enough to buy all the SM's the US was offering with the Kidds in the
package IIRC, and it's not that they literally couldn't afford it. Similarly with not proceeding quickly with various systems (subs, P-3's) the US
has agreed to sell. Although, one issue is little price competition for US providers on anything Taiwan doesn't build for itself, because not many other
countries are willing to sell weapons to Taiwan nowadays.

Well, the remaining 100 SM-2 Block IIIB were bought in 2007 to bring the inventory to full for the 4 Kidds, but still not enough for stockpile yet, which
should be bought through out the next 15 years. And authorization of funding for the 12 P-3C, 9 Patriot 3(upgrade of existing 3 battery of PAC-2 GEM to PAC-3,
and 4+2 new PAC-3 batteries) plus the 8 SSK submarine deal were just passed by end of 2007.

The SM-2 Block IIIB doesn't have an "option" for IR homing, it uses IR for terminal guidance only in cases where the illuminator is jammed. Big
difference.
