I wouldn't really call 2,000 feet buzzing a ship, but I could be wrong.

I would have thought even trying to directly overfly a carrier would have got you a face full of Slammers before you even got there, let alone managing to do
it at two thousand feet. Perhaps the article got some of its figures wrong?

Their are plenty of pictures online of Russian bombers flying over carriers, no big deal.

Russian Bears overflying a US Carrier??!! This is funny. That was a daily occurrence for us in 79/80. Seemed like we launched the Alert 5 just about everyday.
In fact, it was during one of these intercepts that we learned from a Ruskie pilot that we had won the Miracle On Ice Hockey game. Another funny flyover was
right in the middle of an air wing demo where the air wing formation overtook a Bear that had come in close for a look. Here's a pic I took of the event:

CV43 is correct...this was a common occurence during the Cold War years. However, after many years of relative quiet, there has been an alarming spike in
incidents like this in the past year or so. The Putin government flexing its muscles, perhaps?
Still, I appears that the DOD doesn't seem to think that an obsolete Russian Bear patrol bomber is a threat to a CVN. Needless to say, if that Bear had been shown to have been armed, it would have been shot down by the intercept fighters long before it had reached Nimitz. Regards, Bill |

cv43coralsea, great picture!! I like it! a question - weren't you on the Coral Sea? How did the Tomcats get in there?
concur. routine and happened all the time. I've a nice photo of one I shot from the deck of the Midway looking straight up. "I would have thought even trying to directly overfly a carrier would have got you a face full of Slammers before you even got there, let alone managing to do it at two thousand feet." why? its international airspace. Fact is, we all used to "play" pretty rough sometimes but we all stopped well short of exchanging ordanance. Its all part of the game. A very serious game, but still a game. |

How soon people forget. Otherwise Putin is trying to raise morale at home. I imagine the "Fear and Outrage" crowd will have somthing new to talk
about.

We should respond by flying a hundred WWI biplanes over the Kuznetzov.

Thanks for setting me straight guys, I really wouldn't have thought it would be that 'relaxed'. I've read stories from the Cold War, but I
just assumed I guess that things would be different now, not sure why. Thanks.
cv43, great photo! Thanks for posting it. |
