I don't expect the Nimitz or Ford class to make it. In fact, I don't want them to. My point is that more ships WILL be preserved no matter what. Maybe
some carriers down the road that become historic for some as of yet unknown reason. I think that the only way to continue ship preservation long-term is to
build up existing collections, such as the Fall River group, centered around a battleship or carrier. This has worked successfully in numerous places and
should in the future. Ships will be lost, but then they always have been. Remember Cabot? I sure as hell do, arguably the greatest historical loss since
Enterprise in 1955. Des Moines and Conolly are two other recent losses. A little farther back, the AM Inaugural sank in a storm. I believe her wreck is still
lying on its side in the harbor. Continuing with the carriers, Saratoga is very likely going to be preserved in RI, they have all the funds and are now
completing their enviromental study. Same with Charles F Adams (DDG) and an effort to save Ticonderoga (CG) is doing well in Mississippi. As long as there are
ships, there will be people trying to save them.

And who gave you the right to declare all ships built after WW2 as historically worthless... which is the only reason to ban their preservation?

And I don't see the need to make all 4 Iowa's into museums, they are more historically worthless than any modern Carrier.

Yeah, that one should be a museum, not all 4.

All served with distinction during World War 2, Korea, NJ in Vietnam and Wisconsin in the Gulf War round one. Iowa was the class leader and served in the
Atlantic neutralizing the threat of Tirpitz, New Jersey was Halsey's flagship, Missouri had the surrender of Japan signed on her and Wisconsin served over
three wars. You try and tell me they are historically worthless.
"A very important document".....geez..... |

Yeah? And the original CV Enterprise was more instrumental during the war and it wasn't saved, the only thing the Iowa's really have going for them is
some cool looking guns, they spent more time in mothballs than in service.

As for them having cool guns.. yes they are cool but we already have the Alabama, Mass, NC, and TX to be awe about and they were not enough so I glad we are keeping the Iowas around. CV Enterprise should've been saved but it didn't and we have the current Enterprise and we should be able to try to save her we owe her namesake that much or have her replacement renamed. I know alot you guys don't like the Iowas for whatever reason. but we will never build battleships again and we should be glad to have them period We will however will keep on building CVNs and that why I don't see any of them being saved anytime soon, maybe not in our lifetime. |

(My apologies on the poor example pic...it was the only one of the island seen up-close from that era that I could find online on short notice!) Cheers, Bill |
