After Coronel, the British squadron in the South Atlantic was commanded by Read Admiral Stoddart. What if they met Spee's squadron before Sturdee and the Battlecruisers arrived? German Forces: Vice Admiral Count Von Spee AC Scharnhorst (Flag) 22 knots, 8 x 8.2 inch, 6 x 5.9 inch AC Gneisenau 22 knots, 8 x 8.2 inch, 6 x 5.9 inch LC Dresden 24 knots, 10 x 10.5 cm LC Nurnburg 24 knots, 10 x 10.5 cm LC Leipzig 24 knots, 10 x 10.5 cm British Forces: Rear Admiral A C Stoddart AC Carnarvon (Flag) 22 knots, 4 x 7.5 inch, 6 x 6 inch AC Cornwall 23 knots, 14 x 6 inch AC Kent 23 knots, 14 x 6 inch AC Defence 23 knots, 4 x 9.2 inch, 10 x 7.5 inch LC Glasgow 25 knots, 2 x 6 inch, 10 x 4 inch ~~LC Bristol 25 knots, 2 x 6 inch, 10 x 4 inch~~ EDIT - remove Bristol - re-checked my source material and found she wasn't there, see post below. Notes (1) Canarvon and Cornwall were commisioned from the Reserve Fleet at the outbreak of war, but have had 3 months to work up. The remainder are crewed by Regulars (2) Spee had fired off roughly 50% of his 8 inch ammo at Coronel, but that should still leave him enough for this fight. It's not given as a consolidated list, but it only took a little piecing together from the info provided. (Chapter 11 - Admiral Craddock's Voyage) Start of War - Cradock is in command of North America and West Indies Station, with Suffolk, Berwick, Essex, Lancaster and Bristol. After mobilisation he is reinforced with Carnarvon, Cornwall, Cumberland, Monmouth (all commissioned from reserve fleet), and later also joined by Good Hope. NAWI Command split: Rear Admiral A C Stoddart with Carnarvon, Cumberland and Cornwall left to deal with West Indies and upper South Atlantic while Craddock hunts Spee. (Chapter 13 - "Very well Luce. We'll sail tomorrow") Post Coronel the Admiralty signals Stoddart: "Carnarvon, Cornwall should join Defence off Montevideo. Canopus, Glasgow, Otranto ordered if possible to join you there. Kent will come from Sierra Leone" By 17 November all the AC had gathered at Abrolhos Rocks, joined by Glasgow later. NOTE - re-reading the book, it looks like I might have been mistaken about Bristol being present - I've edited the first post accordingly (EDIT - What is it with Yuku? It keeps changing the formatting and taking out paragraphs, lumping all the text into one lump - it's frustrating when you keep having to re-edit for clarity because the system hates its users!) As to the orginial post it comes down to who starts landing hits. I give the Germans a slight edge here Gneisenau and Scharnhorst were top gunnery ships of the HSF. The problem is even if the Germans win I don't see Stoddart force getting chopped to bits the same way Coronel played out. This RN force is a better force, no AMC's, and has more regular crews. Most likely is whoever wins is going to have wrecks for ships and if the Germans win they will be out of ammo. Michael

Michael After two won battles, von Spee can put his ships into any neutral port to be interned and still expect to get the Kaiser's thanks after his return to Germany. His immediate plan will be to escape, and then I'd say his gunners are the better ones.
