Hi,
This discussion has come up in the past. IIRC, the edge was given to Alaska, primarily due to the fact that her radar and better gunnery range would allow her to increase her chances of getting a hit first. In the absence of radar, then it's a toss-up...basically whomever gets a (critical) hit in first will likely win. Regards, Bill |

Here we go again... Well... In theory the Scharnhorst's armour is capable of resisting the Alaska's guns over a realtively wide IZ, whilst the Alaskas
only has a narrow IZ against the Scharhorst's cm guns. However, there is no question that the Alaska has much better Radar and FC equipment, on account of
being several years younger so she will probably hit first. She's also a couple of knots faster, although probably not enough to make much difference in
practice.
In a "Fair" fight the I'd tip my hat to the Scharnhorst as she's much more likely to survive the encounter, but war isn't about fair fights so in practice the Alaska would proabably have it. It would be a tight scrap either way...

it seems like Alaska's guns can penetrate the Twins belt at something like up to 16K and penetrate her decks past 24K. Of course you do have the turtle deck behind the belt in Scharnhost .However as Theodore stated in the earlier thread the utility of the turtle deck design is very open to debate. Then there is the boiler hump which also maybe be an exaggerated design weakness it seems somesourse say Duke of York disabled Scharnhorst at North Cape in this way but it's not known for sure. In guns verse turret armor it seems the Alaska is slightly better off though the Twins like the Bismarck MAY have had turrets just about vulnerable at any range to any BB type gun. Alaska's belt should be safe past about 22K and decks out to about 32-33K. As far as Scharnhorst's heavier secondaries doing alot of damage outside the citadel well Colorado was plummeled pretty good and her performance didn't suffer too much so maybe the unprotected ends criticism of all or nothing ships is exaggerated. The only thing that is a clear advantage for either ship is Scharnhorst's 10,000 ton wieght advantage. From Garzke & Dulin it appears that the Twins & Alaska both have a rather shallow belt vulnerable to under the belt hits but I don't know too awfully much about underwater trajectories. I would give a clear advantage in TDS to the Twins. All in all I think the USN did pretty good in what they designed in to the Alaska's.

The Alaska needs to stay at long range and pummel the Scharnhorst with her 12 inch guns. The Scharnhorst not being able to close will have to try to shoot
through her deck armor with her 11 inch guns.

"In guns verse turret armor...."
Keep in mind, I taught grammar for a number of years. I am sorely tempted to bludgeon you with my Webster's Third International. |

You should have been one of my kids. I'd have whipped you into a Straight-A student.
Now, stop trying to use prepositions as verbs. "Versus" is a preposition; "verse" is poetry. Did you enjoy my haiku? |
