So, the award for the greatest area of shortage goes to RAMC medical officers (cutters and gassers), with an honourable gong going to FAA aircrew...

From what I understand Lord Arpad that's not strictly true: the pay isn't magnificent although there are some staggering bonuses out there to try and
get people with the right qualifications into uniform (had a friend - a facial reconstruction surgeon from Portsmouth - who was offered a staggering bonus to
join the army). The problem is actually far more basic than that, mainly the job itself. Given the ongoing wars, a general cutter or an orthopod can expect to
be sent to either Iraq or Afghanistan, probably several times. And that would mean having to spend months on end putting back together the broken bodies of
soldiers and civilians; and that's not fun. A qualified surgeon is already going to know this, and no amount of pay is going to entice most to join.
Interestingly, note that there are no equivalent shortfall of medical personnel in the navy. If I had to guess, I'd say what's happened is that all the people who want to join but don't much care for the MASH-esq feel of the current army are joining the RN. |
