Registered Member Posts: 308 (21-Jan-2008 12:19:16) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Design me an Armored Cruiser intended for foreign station, to protect her majesty's colonies from the threats posed by raiders in the light cruiser or smaller category. These ships should also be able to serve in secondary duties such as mine-laying and raiding enemy commerce. Ideally, we want ships that displace much less than contemporary battlecruisers and cost much less as well. Otherwise we would just buy the battlecruisers and send them in instead. Ideal armament is the 1908 Mark V 7.5"/50, with a shell weight of 200lbs, 100 rounds per a gun. We want a uniform main armament, rather than the mix of guns on the preceding Minotaur class. A broadside strength of six guns is desired. A suggested method would be two twin mounts fore and aft, with four single gun wing turrets in a hexagonal pattern. Secondary armament is suggested to be the 1908 Mark IV 4"/40, with a shell weight of 47.5 lbs. Torpedo tubes are optional, but if mounted would be 18" in size. Ideal armored protection would be 4-5" Side Belt protection to vitals, 2-3" deck armor, and 6" Protection for Turret faces and Conning Tower. At least splinter protection for end side belts. Ideal propulsion would be 25 knots on coal fired boilers. Minimum range to meet the colonial station criteria would be 10,000 nm at 12 knots. In addition, up to 500 tonnes of reserved provisions are requested for mine laying equipment and other materiels as needed. Good seakeeping and stability are requested with this cruiser.

Rebuild the Duncan class Pre-dreadnoughts. The 1912 rebuild requires new turbines and boilers as well as revised coalbunker age. A good time to re-skin some of the hull at the same time but its only 14 years old so it should be pretty sound. Remove the lower 6" casemates and move one pair up a deck level displacing six of the amidships mounted 12pdr guns. While reducing the number of secondary and tertiary guns by half the shell supply per gun is doubled. Have four twin torpedo tubes placed were the lower casemates were. Additional tonnage is available for mine racks and internal subdivision has been improved. The only penalty is a drop in sea keeping ability from the original . This should for fill all needs and ruin Admiral Von Spee's day. Below the rebuild is my original base line sim of HMS DUNCAN 1898 for reference. I think the 18" torps are a waste of space. This ship would be good for Coronel or Falklands. Good for showing the flag in the colonies and shore bombardment and for chasing down the odd German raider.
