Is it not part of the reorganisation a few years ago where the sea commanders became 1*: Are there not two? Commander UK Task Group and Commander Amphibious
Task Group? Both are 1* I believe.

There are two seperate 1* battlestaffs (and IIRC there is a 2* one as well) which are designed for this sort of exercise.

There are 2 x 2* Staffs and 4 x 1* Staffs - UK CSG (Carrier Strike Group) are leading this deployment.
This link describes the C2 structure of the UK Maritime Battlestaff. BW |

With the "Naval Strike Wing" (ahem) fully committed in Helmand since October I do wonder if Illustrious will be operating RAF Harriers- or if she'll be flying the flag with Spanish Harriers on deck? Well, they did just practice with USMC AV-8B+s, so they should be ready for the Spanish AV-8B+s. The USMC does have its maintenance support set up in portable workshops, you know. They can be packed into one end of the hangar bay and keep the fancy electron-gadgets working for the trip.
But they will probably be getting those muddy GR.7/9 thingies!
