Posts: 2712 (16-Feb-2006 03:07:47) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I was looking at the following page www.hazegray.org/navhist/canada/postwar/tribal/ and noticed the following image Initially I thought the sea sparrow launcher must be mounted amidships as there was nothing on the bow, but closer examination of this picture showed the exhaust plume to be smothering the forward bridge section. So... It's got a big box of some kind with what look like hatches in the sides. The text says 2 Sea Sparrow quad launchers (with reloads to carry 32 missiles) which I originally thought to refer to a rail launcher of some sort, but it seems to be some kind of enclosed box launched arrangement. Can anyone enlighten me with further information? As far as I know I've never seen this style of launcher before. Thanks Last Edited By: MSR 26-Nov-2007 23:17:31. Edited 1 time.

No other ships, in any navy, used this system. The missiles would be trained outboard of the launcher (in the deckhouse forward of the bridge) on launcher arms port and starboard, with four missiles to an arm. The arms would be brought back inboard for reloading. Intended to refer to it above. Does anyone have any more info on how this worked and perhaps pictures of the thing in action? Anyone know how it was considered at the time in comparison to more traditional rail launchers? In other words, why go to the trouble? Cheers

Posts: 4289 (17-Feb-2006 12:51:34) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	There's a picture in the older edition of World Naval Weapon Systems, but my scanner died a while back. Basically the quad launcher is a tubular beam with four launch rails mounted side-by-side on it. The center of this beam is attached to an extending arm by a pivot joint. In action, the door on the side of the deckhouse slides down and the arm extends outward (the ship's side is sealed up again while the launcher is extended). The beam can then train and elevate the missiles toward the target.

Of course the down side IIRC is that the set up was bloody big, and that being a completly unique system it cost a fair bit.

The usual Mk 29 octuple launcher was also provided with automatic reloading facilities, like on the Norwegian Oslo class frigates, so I don't quite see the benefits of the Canadian system. The Mk.29 automatic roloading happened by training the launcher down so that fresh missiles could be slid up, all of which is fairly exposed IIRC.
