I strongly suspect that had we built them, it would have been instead of the AWD's. I strongly suspect there are people in the DoD and in the wider community that still wish this was so. But thanks for drawing them. But having said that, and given current operational patterns, I think the addition of 4, 3000 ton + high seaworthiness OPV's with 40 crew and virtually unarmed would be highly usefull, and prevent us wearing out the frigates.

I note the portrayed armament has been changed. Lots of little guns! I certainly don't hate them, I think they're impressive as hell! But I concur that their purchase would have substantially altered the RAN makeup today. I'd like to know what we'd do with them too. They're too small for deliberate combat use - although they'd probably hold their own against regional gunboats and corvettes I'm sure - and so big it'd feel odd using them as patrol boats. Wonder if they would prevent the AWDs being purchased? Are you sure they wouldn't simply hasten the retirement of the FFGs? 2-3 may have replaced each one I suppose. They certainly don't negate the 'need' for area air defence...

There are also plenty who see no need for armed forces at all other than blue helmet types. Its easy to lose sight of this given the way the last decade has gone. The preceding decade was very different, and may well be the norm again. This class is quite simmiler to the Dibb concept that eventually became the ANZAC's. There might be a role for an 80m vessel in the RAN ORBAT but not, IMHO one that includes missiles and automatic guns. Put that on a 3000 +ton hull if that is the requirement. There is a roll for a big, long endurance super seaworthy law enforcement OPV, but this ship is not it. You can rule me out of long southern ocean patrols in an 80m 30kt vessel.

Much better than sending our frigates south to have their hulls cracked. A CUSTOMS vessel armed with machine guns may be deployed to the Southern Ocean as part of beefed-up Federal Government monitoring of the Japanese whale hunt. Customs said the Oceanic Viking is not a cruise ship, as reported today, but a "full-time contracted vessel". "The 105-metre Oceanic Viking is fitted with two deck mounted 0.50 calibre machine guns, has a fully-equipped medical centre staffed by an Australian Antarctic Division doctor, and carries a full civilian crew and steaming party," the customs website said. Oceanic Viking is also used to patrol Australia's northern waters. Greenpeace has welcomed the reported plan to use the ship to monitor the hunt. "We're certainly supporting the Australian Government's action that they're taking in sending a ship down," Greenpeace's Karli Thomas told Channel 9 today. "The more scrutiny that we can have on the Japanese whaling operation the better."

You're not breaking the law, but its clear they don't like you... I wonder if the ex-East German corvettes had anything to do with the concept. There're certainly a lot of corvettes/gunboats in the area, but IIRC the Indonesians attracted some attention at the time with that buy. (My bold/italics) I guess this is another "Fantasy Fleets" exercise. As soon as the RAN ordered the Armidale-class patrol boats, then the AWDs, then the LHDs, the shape of the RAN for the next two decades was set. Our regional neighbours don't want to invest in such high-end warships, so the small, versatile corvette is attractive to them. In terms of sustained operational tempo, today's RAN is better placed than any of our neighbours' fleets. We're likely to retain this edge if the Howard government's commitments are honoured by the new administration.
