Something to do with being a little overweight and the wings spars not having the full load capability. I expect that Germany and France will end with these duff jobs, asthey're the most in need of new aircraft. Quite happy with the C-17 additions. RAF has got half what it requested 4 leased bought + 4 new buys. Pretty much a no brainer to fulfill this needs given all the extra hours the aircraft are gaining on operations! Stan

Posts: 778 ( 9-Dec-2007 22:46:21) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I thin that Stan is saying that the RAF is getting half of what it wants in the sense that they have requested 4 new build C-17 and they're getting 2, which brings the total fleet to 6 as opposed to 8. Of course, when the idea of a heavy lifter buy was first raised in the mid-late 1990s, the RAF wanted 6, but operational experience has probably showed that more is better.

It seems rare nowadays that an initial requirement is increased, let alone by 50%. In fact I would expect the MOD to take advantage of any further slippages in the A400M programme to delete a few and tack on some more C-17s or to make use of any delayed delivery compensation to increase the fleet. S

I read somewhere that the RAF want another 2 C-17s, due to the delays of the A400M. I would be surprised to see the early replacement of the C130J by a second batch of A400M. I also read that part of the C-5 upgrade by the USAF, will be cancelled and for those aircraft to be scrapped and replaced by further C-17 orders, which could allow further C-17 orders.

WHile I agree that this huge a/c is not a replacement for the herc, it would be a real shame to see it ease into obsolescence when it's still such a vital and relevant tool in service.
