According to wiki: 7 front-line squadrons, plus OEU, OCU and 95 aircraft in reserve for sharing flight hours and attrition replacements (assuming Tranche 3 is
acquired). OEU and OCU are full-sized squadrons with the role of training pilots to fly the Typhoon, and are equipped with a mixture of 2-seat T.1s and 1-seat
F.2s. The front-line squadrons fly the F.2, and the first ground-attack squadron (No.6) stands up in 2008.
Eventually, all Typhoons will have air-to-ground capability. This, combined with the fact that aircraft will rotate between squadrons and reserve, means that aircraft will probably rotate between fighter and ground-attack. However, the Typhoon will never be the UK's main ground attack aircraft. That is currently the Tornado GR.4 and Harrier GR.7/GR.9, and will eventually be the Lightning. |
