Hmmm. Well, it's in character, but I'll admit I'm surprised by both the liners showing up here and the detaching of ships to go hunting cripples, I
was thinking that the condition of the HSF would preclude dividing the force up any more once FSG got there (of course, I was also figuring that the liners and
their escorts were still en route for Germany).

Well Once DeR decides to retire from action he will likely deploy his battleworthy units to protect the cripples, particulary as Napiers lost boys are still
lost and HWF hasn't arrived just yet. A few BCs and two DNs are not likely to frighten him away, adding the one fish ships (fish and ships is something of
a British specialty IIRC) might but their combat value is questionable. The two Ks left behind ARE very painfully missed this day...

So three battlecuisers and two dreadnoughts go hunting while Letters escorts the liners with his own cripples back to Germany.
I`m waiting for XLVI ! |

I guess it depends if he is taking the TBD's that Necki had with him which should all have fish or the ones he just had in battle?

Caught me a bit by surprise there, Jim. Wasn't expecting new LT, so I'm glad to see it.

Comment on the writing. Even though several things are going on it didn't feel broken up. Nice easy progression between the various ships. One thing
you might have had some of the American civilians see the broken German fleet and say or ask something to the effect, "Has the German fleet been
defeated?" and then, even to be overly dramatic, just as Posen turns turtle one of the Germans responds with, "No this is victory..." If
nothing else the civilians should be very interested by the view.

Mike,
I think that you have a VERY astute analysis here. DNs showing up to "finish the fight" with the GF will have to spook DeR for all the reasons that you alude to. Comment on the writing: I enjoyed it, but as I went to bed last night i did think that one thing was "missing" (poor word choice) and that was the Civilian perspective on the liners. But I also almost considered this as a "cliffhanger (a stylistic point that jim has been known to employ on occasion.) Jim, Where are the U-Boats?????????????? |

Broad grins? Now why would Hanzik and Stang be glad to hand Coblentz and Glock off to someone else? The Vulcaneers will do Helgoland some good, but not help
the COs blood pressure that much.
Borys' wetness, hunger and misery know no bounds. He thinks they're bad now. Wait until he sees that the north-bound plumes southwest of him are from British dreadnaughts. I'm betting the stuff Northeast of him, that gave such loud answers to his questions, are the "Greek twins." He may have a chance of launching another pickle, er, torpedo at the cruisers unless they drive him into the DNs. Getting away looks like a lower-probability entry in the list of outcomes. There are a lot of signals flying up and down halyards. You try to convey a hectic time, but not a lot of confusion. The flag signalling was good enough to send a lot of short messages in a short time as they are doing. The written orders work for more complicated situations, at least if you're not in a sieg. Now for my guesses as to what's happening: Letters and Hanzik in the wounded Moltke along with the two smaller LCs will escort the liners to port quickly. I don't see him parading Adm Napier in front of the American press before they get to port. The great Pasha will also be disappointed not to receive the greeting and thanks of the HSF commander until they disembark. Rudberg will bring the 4 remaining DNs to port when Helgoland is ready to move. He'll have some screen, probably the TBs that have no torpedoes left. Necki has already written his own orders in anticipation. He's getting the battle-worthy DNs and BCs. Force Necki is the task group to which the term "Force" applies. It would be a real disappointment if the written orders are not what he anticipates. The only question is what screen does he have. Strassburg, Rostock, Kolberg and Augsburg are shown forming screen, being attached to each other and having TBs attached to them. The text does not say who Von Hoban is attached to: Necki, Rudberg or Letters. Strassburg is assigned to Necki, not Von Hoban. I'd think fresh LCs and torpedo-equipped TB should be part of Force Necki, but only if they have enough fuel. Nits: The intrepid pirate Borys is said to be on s.35 in the Rostock paragraph, but then on s.31 in his own POV |

Probably looking for food in the other TB.
A going hunting Necki goes... The British have 6 effective (as in capable of firing guns) dreadnoughts right? Does VDT have enough coal to go hunting, or will she end up being towed back home? Nice suspense filled story, wonder if Borys can pass as a Brit DD. |
