A Navantia delegation was in Mebourne on Tuesday for contract signings and apparently someone on the Aus side dropped a hint. Nothing official just rumors. Is that still possible? I know they're hoping to commission the first by 2013 for the centennial celebrations, but it seems optimistic to me. Multiple sources are now saying the same thing: if the AWD Alliance is able to deliver the first 3 at or better than the contract conditions, then a 4th is the reward. Brendan Nelson even said words basically to that effect on an interview that is posted on his website, and says that the decision would be made sometime within the next 12 months to coincide with the SPY-1D/Aegis production schedule. Of course this does mean that the AWD Alliance will need to make strong progress before any steel is cut, which is challenging but not impossible.

Juan Carlos I is due to be in the water by early next year IIRC, our two LHD will be following her down the slips as soon as Navantia can physically do it. So first steel cutting next year isn't at all unreasonable, although don't expect to see block consolidation on a slipway for a while yet. Regarding final delivery date... Juan Carlos I is running to schedule which is a good start, and we're using a modification of existing systems for the CMS (the 9LVMk.3E/4 of the Anzac class) so there shouldn't be too much risk in that...

And lessons learned on the JC1 should expedite the construction of Aus ships. For example. I've heard that they had to lay the berthing blocks three times before the engineers were happy with the alignment. Holding the fourth AWD as a carrot would be the wise thing to do. But elections can precipitate announcement...
