I really enjoy alternative history both as an intellectual exercise which can expand one's understanding of the factors driving the choices made in the past and as a diverting pastime of 'fantasy fleets'. One of the simplest was of coming up with an interesting situation is, for afficinanadoes of Radio 4's 'I'm sorry i havent a clue', what I like to thin of as ' One war to the background of another'. So how would you counter situation in 1914 with 1940 or 2020 technology would count. What I do have problems with is when alternative history bumps into detailed discussions on current matters. while wanting to ask 'why aren't we planning today for mass unrestricted submarine warfare with Russia' is interesting it doesnt help on, say, a thread on how we are squeezing 3 OPVs out of a hugely limited budget. Should we break out 'fantasy RN' into a wholly enjoyable and amusing sub forum and leave the boring nasty nitty gritty of today's reality in a separate section.?
