Ownership of the vessels remains with the United States. Towing will be required from the carriers' locations in Philadelphia, PA and Bremerton, WA to the Contractors' facilities in accordance with the U.S. Navy Tow Manual. The contract(s) will be five-year Indefinite-Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contracts awarded on a firm fixed-price basis at the net cost to the government, considering the estimated value to the Contractor of the resulting scrap metals and reusable items...." They would also make a stupendous artifical reef (although the HAZMAT removal would be hugely expensive). Waiting periods are only a step. Registration is only a step. Posts: 5931 Jan 29 12 5:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Nothing really new here- these were slated for razor blades years ago. Meanwhile, Ranger and Kennedy are for the time being on donation hold, while Kitty Hawk is in ready-reserve status pending Ford's commissioning.

Lots of stuff torn out and covered over with cheap metal to keep the water out. The hulls have lots of asbestos, and heavy metals. Lead paint?

The layouts and other things on these ships are still highly classified due to their similarity to current CVN's. The USN would never allow them to be sunk as reefs.

When we SLEP'ed the Hawk and Connie in Philly, ever space was needled gunned and sanded to bare metal and repainted with non-lead based primer and paint. All the asbestos was also removed. That said there is still thousands of miles of all sorts of wire and rubber gaskets and other thinngs. When I was on the Connie we raided Forestal of anything we could use or thought we could prior to leaving Philly. RP2 (AW/SW) Ryan

As these are truly the only ships with "armor" on them compared to the "testing" they have done on frigates and destroyers which frankly don't count. When steel is $200/ton, yea someone will take said ship and dismantle it. So, in just scrap, said ships are worth approx 50k tons x $200 = $10 Million bucks. PS. called them 50k tons when everything not steel is stripped. This is probably a bit generous. The copper isn't even worth worrying about. Its any asbestos used as wire insulation and lead paint that will be deal killers. Said Navy will be paying for that big time.

All very classified, no photos or videos released at all save the roiled water after the plunge. Sunk in very, very deep water, too.
