"For some time, Admiral Nimitz had been urging political leaders to confer the five-star rank of a Fleet Admiral upon Spruance, pointing out that his war
service had been comparable to that of Halsey, and that the only authorized vacancy in the five-star rank had been given to Halsey rather than to Spruance
because Halsey had seniority. Congressional leader, though acknowledging the merit of Admiral Nimitz's recommendation , were reluctant to set a precedent
of increasing the number of Fleet Admirals, but four days before Spruance's retirement, Congress authorized the President to appoint one officer to the
permanent grade of Admiral, would receive the full active duty pay a allowances of that grade for life. Although the act did not specify Spruance by name, it
imposed certain conditions of service and status which could only be met by Raymond Spruance, who was so appointed."

Congress had specified 4 5-star posts each for the Army and Navy. It was unfair, as - IIRC - Bradley was given the 4th 5-star billet made available when Hap
Arnold died in 1950, and Spruance outlived all 4 Fleet Admirals.

The answer cited by jlyons97 is consistent with the account in Buell's wonderful (though somewhat cheerleading) Spruance biography: "Quiet
Warrior".

My then-current floating home was USS King (DLG-10) then in Regular Overhaul (oh, joy, oh rapture) in the Hunter's Point NSY in San Francisco Bay. Our Ops Officer was tapped to escort Mrs Nimitz (still living on Yerba Buena Island, I think) to the funeral. She was reported to have said something to the effect that.."well, now that all of them are back together, I suppose they're rehashing everything again." |

Last I heard Spruance, Nimitz, and R.K. Turner were all buried at the Presido. The Presidio is now in the National Park system. I took a quick look at their
web site and can't find any mention of the graves. Anybody know if they are still there, or did I mis-remember the location?

Charley Lockwood as well- there's a powerhouse gang of four. Turner not necessarily one of my favorites, but still..
Nimitz- plot C-11 Spruance- plot C-13 Lockwood- plot C-5 Turner- plot C-7 Mrs Nimitz was probably right on the money. She's buried there too. I'll be out in San Francisco in October and if time allows I'll pay the gents a visit. charley aka Desert Sailor |

I believe Bradly was promoted after Arnold became General of the Air Force which opened up an army 5 star spot.
