The Benjamin B. Barton was the only vessel to carry an operational AN/SPG-59. The vessel was built for evaluation of new systems that were being considered in the middle 1960s. The AN/SPG-59C was a less shopfisticated version of the earlier AN/SPG-59A tested on the Norton Sound a few years earlier. The AN/SPG-59C was an electrically scanned 2D air search radar. Every 15 cycles a selected target would be selected and a frequency scanned height finding beam would update the altitude on the track. Originally the system could track 8 targets in 3 dimensions at once. Two AN/SPG-51 radars can be queued from the AN/SPG-59C. The system was upgraded in 1978 with new computers and transmitter elements developed for the AN/SPY-1 radar. The new version of the radar was designated AN/SPG-59E. The AN/SPG-59E was a true 3D radar and could track up to 24 targets at once. A software upgrade in 1983 enabled her to track nearly 50. She was kept in service as part of the 600 ship fleet as a DDG and not a research vessel. She was upgraded with software for the New Threat Upgrade in 1986. She was armed with Block IIIA SM-2MR missiles until she was decomissioned in 1992.
The Barton also was equipped with a unique broadband antenna through out he service life.
