That's the IJN's Hosho as of about 1922 before her island was removed.

Thanks DS, it was the island that threw me. I never saw an island like that so other than knowing she was IJN, I was clueless.

Yes, I figured as much. There is a picture, taken from the starboard stern quarter of Hosho, with her island in Jentschura, et al. I had not seen the excellent
picture you posted before. The Hosho, like most carriers of her period was largely experimental, and one of the big questions among carrier advocates was
"to island" or "not to island" because of the air eddies it caused when the ship was moving. These eddies had a strong negative effect on
control of the early planes when they were landing. The Japanese built Hosho with an island, but decided to remove it, and see if it improved the situation for
the pilots. The modification was done in 1923, and she operated the rest of her active career without an island.

That's CV "Hosho" during the trials off Tateyama on the 4th December 1922.
