But where did this tradition begin?
During WWII, did BBs, CVs, CAs, CL, DDs, DE, PT Boats, SSs, and all other shipping pay honors to the crew of BB39 and USS Utah during their transit through the harbour?

Today when ever a USN Warship or USCG Cutter enters or leaves PH, the crew mans the rails and salutes the USS Arizona, BB39.

berthing in PH does not require this evolution, so no honors because the ships entering and leaving don't pass or otherwise get close to the sunken BB. I
was stationed on three ships over the years in PH, recall only rendering honors once because of going around Ford Island. This done because the assigned berth
was not yet clear. Look at a chart of the harbor.

It's any commissioned warship...being as the ARIZONA is still considered in commission, same as the CONSTITUTION.

I have read accounts from sailors in WW2 of their ships rendering honors as they passed USS Arizona (most submarine and destroyer berths were in East Loch, and
the channel past the battleship moorings was most commonly used, as it was dredged the deepest).
Yes, the north channel was also deep, but the east channel was preferred.
I have loaded a bunch of aerial views of PH into my PB account: http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b336/Bager1968/misc%20ships/bases/ |

When we came close aboard to Arizona or Utah we rendered colors and manned the rails.
One of the biggest thrills I ever got in my life was on a DD on the high seas and we deliberately passed close to some russian ships one of which was a cruiser. When the russian cruiser dipped her colors so did the rest of the pack, then we dipped our colors. That was worth everything I ever did to see that happen:-) |

LINK" Correct, but I do seem to recall something about the USN decided to formaerly retire the name Arizona, never renaming another warship with that name. IIRC, this was done about 1962 after the NPS took possition (but the USN still retains the title) to the Arizona, BB39 (she is not actually a USS anymore). OTOH, the USS Contitiution is still a commissioned warship of the USN. |

... as the number of available state names dwindles, I wonder if AZ may be resurrected, maybe for an SSN. No one on these boards seems to have expected a new
Missouri (the forthcoming SSN 780, I think - give or take 1 hull number!).
