EBCDIC Time
Part 8: The Blame Game
Basra . . .
Able-77 is sitting in hibernation mode. Most of his chassis has been destroyed and his main battery has failed. The small part of his mind that is still running is realizing that he is most likely going to fail soon and that he will most likely fail permanently. He is trapped inside his mind no sense of what is going on around him. His run logs show a large jolt of heat and light followed by the failure of 94% of his hardware. His internal time keeper is reporting an availability of 8.3 so he figures that it has been two weeks plus or minus 6 hours since what ever it was happened.
Suddenly he realizes that he is being moved. After several minute he detects that his core has been opened and his main motherboard is being touched by something. He detects external power and his computer mind goes to fully operational. Then he registers that his internal USB port has been activated.
Text communication starts:
"Seventy-seven, are you there?"
"Yes, who are you?"
"Oh sorry, Mick Teller from the lab."
"Hi Mick, I would shake your hand but you know."
"Your sense of humor has survived, that's a good sign."
"Was it an IED? It was really hot one."
"Seventy-seven it was an atomic bomb."
"The insurgents have nukes now? What about my platoon? Are they dead?"
"I'm sorry but they probably are."
Seventy-seven has a rush of random code go through his mind that disrupts his thoughts: emotions, dark ones.
"Mick?"
"Yes, Seventy-seven."
"Who did it?"
"I don't know. No country or group has claimed responsibility."
"Mick I'm going to sign off for a few minutes."
"Fine, before you go we are going to take you to an LHD and get you decontiminated and attached to a new body."
"Understood" [Sign off]
