A ghastly idea for an Iowa rebuild |

Last night as I was dozing off I had this vision of an Iowa rebuilt in the 80's as a hybrid carrier like Ise/Hyuga. They took off the aft turret and all
the machinery and magazines for it, and built a little angled deck to port. The ship embarked harrier jets and helicopters. So, what would something like
this have been like in the real world? Could they have had room for 10-12 jets and helicopters? Would it have been the ugliest ship of all time?

Ahoj!
"Would it have been the ugliest ship of all time?" No, not by any measure. Late XIXth century French designs are uncomparably ugly. Borys |

The Navy had a similar idea. Look about 3/4s of the way down the first page.

Japanese model company Nichimo made a plastic kit they called "Iowa Faces II" showing their concept of the rebuild.

Here is the "single-angle" one:
And one of an "Assault Iowa":

It was my understanding that a number of concepts were scuttled because the removal of the aft turret caused ballast problems that could not be resolved. I
know the Ise-Hyuga project involved the pouring of lots of concrete. Does not seem like a good idea to me.

Removing the aft turret really upsets the equilibrium of the ship. Ise and Hyguya had weight/stability problems that the tons of cement mitigated but
didn't fix.
Nicotine: America's number one mind altering chemical.

Eew. An angled flight deck on the rear of an Iowa? Now, I could see a regular flight deck, with the idea of mounting SeaCobras for Amphib support and Sea Kings
for ASW work, mounted aft, but the angled flightdeck just looks and is pretty much too ugly and worthless to consider.
And Borys, I'm assuming that your referring mainly to the French armored cruisers, with double ram ends, widely seperated funnels, etc? |

A few years back I posted a story on the fiction board about Carnival Cruise lines buying the battleship New Jersey and converting the back half into a cruise
ship. Passengers had an opportunity, for an extra fee, to load and fire the 16 inch guns.
The Carnival spokesperson called it; "The ultimate in Adventure Cruising!" DDWW |
