MOD has anounced the sale of T42 Glasgow to Bolivia thus giving the veteran destroyer a last minute reprieve from the breaker's yard.. The ship wich has
been virtually stripped of equipment for use on her sisters will be towed to Punta Arenas in Chile where she will be fitted with Olympus gas turbines plus
radars and other electronic equipment removed from ex County DLG's laid up in that country. Subject to sufficient funds, Israeli Ba\rak SAM will be
installed as Seadart has been removed prior to sale. Argentina has been approached with a view to the purchase of Tyne gas turbines from Hercules currently
laid up but with Tynes and "other equipment" available for sale. Glasgow, under her new name, Coronel Abaroa will be used as a fast troop transport
and will be based at La Paz.

No, via the new canal the Chileans are building to give Bolivia an outlet to the sea, to make up for nicking the entire Bolivian coastline in 1883. It'll
have a lot of locks.

Oddly enough, in the final operations of the Chilean Army in 1883 so as to make Bolivia sign a truce after their defeat in the Pacific War ( when they were
allied with Peru against Chile) was a small torpedo boat, that used to sail in the complex river system that Bolivia uses as a communications and commerce
network. The vessel had to be disassembled and porte'ed through the Atacama desert and the Andes mountain range before reassembled and made operational in
their river system Currently the Bolivian Navy is a quite numerous and busy riverine force, but i Doubt they should have much place for a 4000 tons AA
destroyer on their orbat. And, the Chilean position is that it didnt nick the Bolivian coastline, just that the bolivians didnt abide by the treaties because
of wich Chile ceded the coastline in the first place. Not wanting to make a fuss over the issue here, but perhaps the other side of the coin might be also

SUT Chileno... English-speaking nations have a tradition of committing what are called "April Fool's jokes" (on April 1, also called "April
Fool's Day").
This entire thread (original post and responses) are one such joke, and are not intended to bear any relation to reality, except enough to create the humor intended. Many of us are aware of the history of both the Bolivian & Chilean navies, as well as the history of the attempts to unite Peru & Bolivia into one nation (the last of which was one of the causative factors of the "War of the Pacific" in the early 1880s). The Wars between Bolivia and Paraguay, and the naval operations in the rivers of their border region are also a fascinating subject, one which I have just begun to examine in any depth. |
