First time I had seen the images of overhead Kates (that's what the extended hand and finger were pointing at). Note AA bursts around the planes. Those navy gunners, at Condition III (AA) were on the top of their game. Directors tracking the targets long enough to get a solution, pointers matched on the guns, shells fuzed per director input, and fired. All of this going on in the first minutes of the attack.

This sort of thing has showed up before. It remains nonsense. Let's review:

All ship in PH were in what the USN calls Condition of Readiness III (anti-aircraft). This means one third of all AA weaponry (to includes guns and directors) were manned 24/7. This means they were at 'ready stations' as you call it.

At the very mininum 1/3 of the crews were on board in a duty status, probably another 1/3 (maybe more) were aboard as well. This means officer and enlisted. Your statement about most Officers off the ship is absurd. Flag Officers and COs were aboard in many cases - some died at their battle stations. Most of the junior enlisted were aboard if for no other reason that their rates of pay did not allow opportunity to do otherwise.
