I've made the effort of translating a long (5,000 word!
) article on
the lead ship of the Horizon class, written by Meretmarine. It's a very comprehensive look at a state-of-the-art frigate, written by a respectable trade
journalist (despite a few inaccuracies, excessive claims and onesidedness).
Because of the similarities between the Type 45 and Horizon, I expect that Type 45 includes many similar features, if not even better. In particular, the combat system's complexity and the redundancy built into a large, first-rate warship are very well described. It also gives a good idea of the capability jump we can expect between a Type 42 and a Type 45.
Does anyone have similar details on the Type 45, especially with regards to the combat system, structure, and redundancy? Does anything in the article appear truly revolutionary? IMHO, the Horizons/Type 45s look like a very well-balanced blend of incremental technological improvements. State-of-the-art, yes, but not revolutionary. Altogether, the result looks like it's a step ahead even compared to USN ships. I much prefer this incremental approach to the "big bang" treatment currently trendy across the pond (won't remain trendy for long, one might expect
).
