Two beat up old ex-American destroyers with a paint job. They are not nearly as awesome as a PRC Sovremny. [Yes, that is sarcasm.]
I wonder if the PRC plans any special event to welcome the two ships to Taiwan? If I were in charge I would not let them into the Taiwan Strait without a full weapons load. I suppose they will be quietly and tactfully welcomed into the Taiwan Navy. Still, the next month or two might have some interesting event occur. |

Pulled into Suao naval base in North-Eastern Taiwan on 12-8-05 afternoon(local time). The Kidd class of 4 ships, was renamed Keelung, Suao, Tzorying, and Makung, all after major naval bases in Taiwan.
The two ships traveled from US East coast, passing through Panama Canal, resupply at San Deigo, Pearl Harbor and Guam, before reaching Taiwan. While underway, the 2 ship held joint exercises with ships of US Pacific Fleet/theater, a first since 1978 when US and Taiwan broke off official governmental relationship. Official commission for the first pair of Kidd will take place on 12-17-05. ![]()
