Having been involved in a lengthy debate on the merits and chances for success of a hypothetical Japanese invasion of Oahu just after Dec.7'41, I would now like to request your opinions on just what conditions would be required to end such a fight ?
No need, please, to delve into the "it couldn't have been done" debates nor the "it wouldn't have even been attempted" traps. Thanks. Been there, have the 3 t-shirts already.
If such HAD been tried, if the Japanese had gotten ashore in numbers, just what conditions, do you think, would have caused the US defenders to finally surrender ?
My personnal favourite would be the capture of Honolulu with (hopefully all of) its civilian population and supplies.
Others have suggested the Japanese capture of all of Oahu's airfields and/or ports thus cutting off the flow of supplies to the US defenders.
Would a Japanese capture of one of Oahu's major fortresses such as Schofield Barracks, Fort Schafter or perhaps Fort Ruger, located inside of the Diamaond Head volcano crater, have satisfied the US need for honour ? Perhaps the fall of the governor's residence ?
Please let me know what you think would have been "the last straw" for that island ?
