The typical USN VF was 25-27 F6Fs or F4Fs. The Typical VT was 14-16 TBDs or TBFs. The typical VS was 18 SBDs or SB2Cs. The typical VB was 18 SBDs or SB2Cs.
Later in the war the air group was augmented by a VF(N) with radar equipped F6Fs or F4Us. Also the difference between the VB and the VS became blurred from
late 1942 on. Pre-war doctrine had the VS specialized in scouting. Thus, they were usually first off the deck and the VB and VT would wait until the VS had
made contact and fixed the enemy position. In real war conditions, the VS and VB tended to be treated as equally qualified to scout or bomb and lots of times
the VT would scout as well. Also, later in the war, the VTs really spent more time as level bombers than torpedo bombers.

The average B-17 squadron in the 8th AF had 22-25 bombers.
