Posts: 4488 (22-Apr-2008 05:27:55) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Barring early introduction of the F-35, which fighter aircraft of today stands the best chance against the F-22 in either a single one-on-one dogfight or as a larger six-on-six engagement? A few picks that might stand a chance.... Mikoyan MiG-35 (albeit, more than just one will need to be built) JAS 39 Gripen Dassault Rafale Sukhoi Su-35 Eurofighter Typhoon Chengdu J-10 I believe that none of these aircraft will have the comparable interconnectivity of the F-22s to succeed in the six-on-six fight. Perhaps they'll stand a chance against the Raptor in a one-on-one dogfight?

The Tomcat can supercruise, is very maneuverable for its size and the ST-21 would have had thrust vectoring. Also the Tomcat had a very good long range camera and IR system allowing it the ability to circumvent the Raptor's stealth. Tie that in with some TV guided Mavericks, and the Tomcat mught just have a chance.

AFAIK there are only 5 Su-35's around or so according to wiki (?) and the MiG-35 is't exactly rolling off the assembly lines in great numbers, so what is the reason for not including the F-35 Lightning II? Because it's American? IIRC there should be at least comparable numbers of MiG-35's and JSF's around (didn't production of JSF start this year?). If we can't pick the JSF, then I'd go for the Eurofighter Typhoon first. Secondly I'd go for a late F-15 (or the Rafale) instead of the F-14 Tomcat Desertfox mentioned; I prefer a 4,5 generation aircraft over 3th generation.

So I will pick 10 used MiG-21s vs 1 new F-22. The price should be similiar. With luck the Raptor will run out of ammunition allowing the remaining MiG-21s to own the airspace.

Neither is likely to have all that good of a kill ratio though unless they can suck them into a furball.

With an internal weapons load of 6× AIM-120 AMRAAM and 2× AIM-9 Sidewinder, plus 480 rounds of 20mm ammo, I think we can expect all ten MiG-21s to go down, especially if the F-22 carries any underwing pylon-mounted missiles in addition to its weapons bay.

However both the RAF and USAF stress that both a/c are built for different roles, and are better at different things... Sir Humphrey: Minister, Britain has had the same foreign policy objective for at least the last 500 years: to create a disunited Europe. In that cause we have fought with the Dutch against the Spanish, with the Germans against the French, with the French and Italians against the Germans, and with the French against the Germans and Italians. Divide and rule, you see. Why should we change now when it's worked so well?

Get a flight of Tomcats, hang around just outside of AMRAAM range, wait untill the F-22 runs out of fuel, follow it back and take it out using long range Phoenix shots as it comes down to land. Or even crazier, use F-12 Blackbirds doing Mach 3 Phoenix shots. Even AMRAAM is going to have difficulty shooting down a Mach 3 aircraft, and the reaction time for the F-22 is going to be very very short.

I think that sums it up; tactics. So, you could use up old MiGs until the Raptor runs out of missiles or make it run around til it runs out of fuel......but 1 v 1 BVR.......it's tactics, not brute force that are the key.

Then I can have a decent fighter-bomber force and have some change over to buy a bunch of cruse misiles to take out the F-22 base(s) But if we speaking about air to air kill, first I will use 100 000 conscripts to build gripen decoys and decoys suport equipment to use on the road air bases and then spreed out the air force at the rode bases (Gripen can use short rode strip to land and take off) Now the entrie road network is full of decoys and som one or two ship formations of planes + ther suport stuff. Now use 100 000 more conscripts and have them to spot the F-22, using optical equipment frome eye mk1 to som fansy IR-sensor, and som datalink to the "combat air controll" (stril) Then a F-22 is spotted and the postion is roughly know. The closest Gripen planes get airborn, Remember they are geographic spreed out, so they all are on a difrent angel agenst the F-22. Some Gripen will be in the stealth weak side and can lock on. This information is passed on to the rest of the Gripens using datalink. All the plane will fire ther metorit misiles, the planes who is spotted by the F-22 will dive down and land to be "incisible" Now this will onlye work if the goverment have ben bilding rode bases the last 50 years.... But it nobody can say what will hapend in the "real" the Gripen will never get airborn becuse the did not get the motor spare part (the Gripen have a motor baced on a american one) The ECM jam the Metorits. The F-22 threat system do not react becuse nobady did program the "rare" Gripen radar, and so one..... 10 Gripen will probebly defeat 1 F-22 but 1 F-22 will probebly defeat 1 Gripen.
