In civilian electrical terms, it is called an isolated ground. Beyond basic safety issues, another good reason for isolation is to reduce the problems with
electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise occur. The following link will go to a page showing the emergency diesel generator rooms on BB35:
http://www.ctomscott.com/emergdiesel1.htm These produced 120 volts d.c. As you can see, the aft room is a total loss due to being flooded for probably 10-20
years. It is dry now, but the damage is obviously complete. The forward room and equipment is in such good condition, one would almost think that fresh oil,
fuel and a battery could light it off.

Just about everything on BB35 was DC voltage and of course single phase such as the train and elevation motors on the Turrets.
