Aren't underground submarine pens also traditionally a bit more, well, wet? How are the submarines to get into that high and dry tunnel? Also why just one tunnel entrance - German submarine pens in WW2 were side by side. Anyway what's the point - modern ground penetrating weapons reach a lot deeper and are more accurate than tallboys.

On the topic of the hazardous shallow-water transit from Faslane to the edge of the continental shelf, can anybody really threaten British SSBNs that much in the few hours it takes to leave our coastal waters?

I'm sceptical too about the 6 carriers in the next 10 years. Unless they will all be built in parallel - rather wasteful in infrastructure and giving no opportunity to learn from experience - the first ones must be pretty much complete by now - except they aren't. So what does build 6 mean? Start to build 6 - perhaps. Launch 6 - I doubt it. Complete 6 and get them fully opperational - no way.

There they are identified as 11 tunnels for site entry and excavation. One photo shows a tunnel some way from the sea with an ordinary road going into it so I remain sceptical that these are multiple underground submarine pens to hide a secret fleet of SSBNs.
