The BBC's Age of terror got round to describing this incident last night but from what i could see the plane seemed to spend a very long time on the
ground at Algiers - enough for a 'mole' to tell the French what the plot was.
Anyone know why they spent so long on the ground? |

Possibly the Algerians were hoping to talk them down, and when it became clear that they could not be negotiated with they washed their hands of the situation
and palmed them off on the French.
Kudos to the GIGN for rescuing the passengers. After the programme had ended I did begin to wonder what if the Algerians had sent them on their way earlier and the Airbus had enough fuel to reach Paris? How different would the world be today if the plot had succeeded and we remembered 26th December rather than the 11th September? |

If they were that intent on dieing by crashing into the Eiffel Tower then all they needed to do was start throwing bodies out of the aircraft to get permission
to take off, at that time the true target or even destination wouldn't be known and chances are not many of those Algerian 'Ninjas' would be at the
scene to do anything about it.
Also, seeing as the aircraft was heading for Paris anyway why didn't they wait until the plane had taken off. I smiled at the line from one of the passengers after the terrorists had walked on and were checking passports..something along the lines of 'I started to think these weren't police when I saw the Kalashnikovs'.....maybe it lost something in translation. Given there seems to be a black market in airliner parts, be interesting to now where parts from that Airbus ended up..... |
