Who in your opinion would have been the best choice of commander for Fighter Command, bomber Command, Coastal Command etc at the various stages of WW2 in order to get the best from the resources allocated to that command?

Excellent thought, does anyone know of an interet source (or book) that gives a service biography of RAF Air Vice Marshals and SASO's - not only wartime
but also the period in the late thirties leading up to it?
Considering his previous service experience - I don't understand how Leigh-Mallory got command of 12 Group in the first place!? But I don't know enough about alternatives. Park should have taken over after Dowding - it would have been interesting to see what alternative tactics he would have used with the RAF over France in '41. Dowding new the 'system' and the resources he had - and indeed what he needed! He was a strategist rather than a tactician, Courtney was due to take-over but was ill, he may have been a better tactician, but would he have allowed more squadrons to go to France? The main problem with Coastal Command was the aircraft & numbers available, rather than the commanders. Should Harris have stayed so long in charge if Bomber Command? He obstructed the formation of the Pathfinders, and was fixated about 'German morale' i.e. did his best to avoid Pointblank directives. But who else, Cochrane or Bennet?? After his success with defending RAF Habbaniya in '41, pity higher command couldn't be found for AVM H G Smart! |

It seems strange that in October '40 it was Portal who was appointed Chief of the Air Staff (replacing Newall), when Freeman was the most experienced,
knowing too all the inner-workings of the Air ministry. Some in the Ministry wanted an appointed soon, rather than find by seniority Dowding became CAS!
It seems likely that Freeman, because of his strength of character (yet could be charming when he needed to be), and his knowledge of the character and abilities of senior officers - would have been able to exert more control over people like Harris, when the need arose. |
