Posts: 53 (25-Mar-2006 14:59:54) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hello Does anyone has recent information about the 4 DDGs ex-KIDD to be transfered to Taiwan? Also, are there any drawings of the final look or pictures available of some transformations being made on the structure of the ships? I ask this because I consulted the last ed. of "Warships IFR" and there it has a pic of a ex-KIDD being prepared in the US before transfer. Mainly, the structure above the bridge "seems" to being modified in some scale, although it is difficult to see what is being made because of the temporary working structures mounted there for work. Also, one time i read that the KIDDs would be equipped with a "semi-AEGIS" sistem. Can this modifications on the upper strucutre have something to do with it? Thx

Well, besides the chnage on the rear mast, nothing special and nothing that resembles an AEGIS Thx Guys!!!!

Posts: 1622 (26-Mar-2006 03:00:13) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I had never noticed that only two SPG51 radars are installed and then, AFAIK, only two missiles could be guided, only one vs targets approaching from forward or from aft. Then such a large destroyer is not really much more capable for AAW than old and smaller destroyers like japanese Hatakaze, italian De La Penne or french Cassard. I wonder why those twin launchers have not been coupled to at least 3 guidance radars.

Posts: 357 (26-Mar-2006 03:17:35) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Actually with the NTU upgrades the Kidds recieved they can have rather more missiles in the air, as the SPG51 now only needs to be used for final illumination, which shouldn't take more than a few seconds per target. It's anyone's guess how much missiles the Kidds can now control in flight, but I wouldn't be surprised at eight missiles in the air at once, and possibly more.

Posts: 124 (27-Mar-2006 09:34:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The SPG-60 radar on board, usually used as gun fire control radar, can also be used to direct SM-2 missiles. As with SM-2, which is mid course correction, terminal phase guided, Kidd would have 3 channels of streaming missiles in the air, and only need the 3 radars to provide terminal guidence in the terminal phase of the missile flight. The 1st pair of Kidds were returned to Taiwan in mid December 2005 and commissioned few days later. 2nd pair of Kidd DDGs would return to Taiwan late this year.

That missile is not compatible with the rapid-cycle Mk 26 trainable rail launcher. Contrary to the comment on the NavWeaps page, the new RIM-156 (SM-2 Block IV) series is not compatible with the Mk26, only with VLS. The booster makes this missile too long to fit in the Mk 26 magazine. Thus, the only SAMs for the Kidd class are the RIM-66 SM-2MR series.
