The US Primary System
I've been thinking about it and the primary system is really counter productive. It does a good job of keeping candidates other than a few people with large machines behind them from winning the nomination. Looking at the ways things are now I doubt that if the same rules were in place in 1980 that Reagan could have won the nomination. Also states with earlier primaries in effect have a force multiplier in deciding who gets the nomination especially if its a winner take all state.
My plan:
Candidates announce their candidacy for the nomination between January 15 and January 31.
Candidates campaign in February and March.
Early April small states have primaries and cacusus.
The second half of April larger states with apportioned delegates.
After, May 15th all states that insist with winner take all primaries have theirs.
June, All state conventions in states with them.
August National convnetions.
