Bad news Pascaly, we won't be seeing the new Chinooks till 2011 (according to Army News), and the need to rebuild the D models as F will mean that the fleet stays at 6 birds till 2014... but still good news. Basically, because the Yanks are busy rebuilding most of their fleet and ordering more at the same time, there is very little excess capacity to meet foreign orders (the Canadians have also discovered this).
Maybe somebody could distract Fitzgibbon with a sock puppet in order to allow the department to sneak through an order for another half dozen. That would give us 9 Chinook from early 2012, and a dozen by the end of the year (or perhaps a little later), with 15 by 2014.

Look, the advantage of Fitzgibbon might be the same weakness that we lay into him for so often: the man appears to have all the personality and charisma of household appliance. But that could be a good thing, because it means he might be less likely to force his views and opinions on the department than somebody with more personality (e.g. Bomber Beazley). And while that has it's downsides, it also could mean that the department is able to put the best ideas they have to him and get them through.

Fleet numbers are a bit tricky, but for the moment, there is no feat of man or beast which is going to bring them up quickly. Which is pain in the behind, but there you go. Best choice, actually (IMHO) would be to convince Fitzgibbon to order more now, knowing full well that they won't arrive for several years, and that we can therefore forgo paying for them until long after the term of the current ministry (i.e. if the birds aren't delivered until late 2012, then it could well be the task of the government elected after the next two elections). For my own part, I'm of the opinion that the long term of objective should be a full regiment of Chinook (18 Chinook in 3 squadrons of 6, 12 serviceable at any time) to compliment the full regiment of MRH-90. But that'd be close to a decade off at best, especially since the cheapest and bestest way to do it (buy second hand Yank birds and put them through the F upgrade program) is also one of the longest routes.

As an aside, it would still at least be highly possible that Chinook-G will get the nod as part of Project Redfin (spec-for delivery), in which case there may well be additional orders anyway. Of course they'd belong to SOCOMD-A, but they'd be available for other tasks at least some of the time.
