Perhaps the American SOSUS was directed at potential enemy "break-out" points, but am wondering if the Soviets ever had anything comparable in use?

I believe it was called CEASAR. It was I think more defensive barrier in nature near thier main fleets than SOSUS which tended to bottle in the Soviet
Navy...but that is nature of the greography of the USSR.

There were definitely Soviet hydrophone arrays in the Med. I would imagine they constructed defensive arrays at the entrance to the SSBN bastions as well.
