Somewhere along the line, at Tarawa or Guadacanal, the Japanese are successful in repelling the U.S. invasion of an island chain, causing heavy losses
among U.S. naval and army personnel. As a result, the U.S. timetable is pushed backwards from the losses and waiting for reinforcements before continuing their
campaign.
It is now April of 1945, and the invasion of the Marianas commences.
The Japanese 1st Mobile Fleet, under Ozawa, comes out to play, with a combined force of:

CVs Unryu, Amagi, Katsuragi
CVLs Junyo, Hiyo
CVLs Chitose, Chiyoda

CVL Ryuho
CVL Ibuki

+2 Yamato, 2 Ise, 2 Fuso, 1 Nagato, 2 Kongo BBs
+numerous CAs, CLs, and DD/DEs
(one of the topics I would like to discuss is the organization of the Mobile Fleet, and what aircraft they could embark)
Versus the rebuilt American fleet, consisting of Essex CVs and Independence CVLs.

The IJN carrier force is of marginal use; the IJN's training program was incapable of generating aviators fast enough to replace losses. While the
strategic bombardment of Japan was crippling, the submarine blockade (and the insufficiently heralded minelaying by bomber aircraft) had already severely
handicapped Japan's industries.
