I was one of those Deck Apes, Gene, BM3 on the old Wandering Willy - DDE 847. We were part of 'Wasp's' escort, TF Bravo, - Six days shalt thou toil, on the seventh thou shalt oil!"

Turks heads ring a bell? Stanchions wrapped with canvas and each end closed with a big ol' Turk's Head . . . Bosun's Locker way up in the bows, Irish Lace on the Gig, the .45/70 line throwing guns . . . what memories that stirred.

My No 3 brother was on Okinawa when the typhoon struck. It destroyed just about all structures as well as food supplies and they were left with C rations.

As soon as the typhoon had passed the ships brought in food which was cooked on the ships.

My brother was a Seabee and they turned to and rebuilt the tents and buildings as quickly as possible.

USS Spence, USS Hull and USS Monaghan lost with a total of 790 men lost or missing.

Only about 30 men were picked up.

Typhoon Dec 1944 now dats rough seas and June 1945 we sailed thru it into the eye off okinawa and back into it tawk about calm before the storm hitting monstroius seas then sail into a sunlite and flat water a site to behold and the one in Dec '44 barometer reading of 27.32 at that time was lowest eva registered we lost a cupl of cans they broke in half dies the Monaghan.hull and spence ring a bell
790 men lost the Montereys damage list alone was nine closely typed pages

USN ships are supposed to be grey.

Our ship was rusty brown from the top of the mast holding the search radars to the water line:-)

One would think that a ship cain't take constant pounding like that which goes on for days, and it cain't.

In one 7 or 8 month period we were lucky enough to be in the pacific during the typhoon season and thats the way the ship was most of that time.

It was too rough to go all the way into port so we would drop anchor so far out you could barely see the shore line. They would bring stores and fuel oil out to us and we would get underway as soon as we...

Sitting in the director 50 feet up and about 150 back from the bow I could watch the bow go down inti the ocean.

The bow cut down into the ocean and the water from the deck all the way up to the level of the ocean looked like a plate of glass was holding the ocean back as if it were a glass tank and the 2 walls of water were very smooth.

The only thing that was not smooth up and down was that a white stream of foamy water was shoothing through the oval hawspipe and the...

I was one of the fortunate few that never got seasick no matter what. There were times when on a DD with a 325 man crew there were only about 50 of us that were well enough to stand watch.

I never have slept very good but in rough weather I could sleep like a baby.

One of my favorite things to do on a DD in rough weather was to go up the the MK 37 director and sit in the officers chair which had a canvas hatch top, there was no metal hatch cover.

dose not always mean it is flat water they have had some hellish storms below and above the equator

We came back from Africa with expanded gun liners, and not one of our 16/45 had a full blommers most were shredded if not that, then badly torn it, happened a few othe times as well ,last time it happened was at the blasting of the Jap home land at Honshu! its a wonder we had any liners left when we were called off the line

I think they probably would have fit the 16"/45 but they were all decommissioned by the time they were made for the 16"/50.
