Yea the crew onboard Nimitz said that. A good freind of mine went through it and had pictures and it looked a lot rougher.

The line crossing is supposed to be dirty, messy and at the end brings the crew even closer together... and you get a really, really and I do mean REALLY cool looking certificate (one of my only regrets in my time in the navy is I was never on a ship that did a line crossing). All the older guys on the ship kepts saying how lame it has gotten...

Makes sense especially in some of these countries like Malaysia. That have a terroist element. Just remeber seeing pictures of my Dad and Uncle on liberty, and they always had on atleast their tropicals. They were Westpac Sailors in the late 60s.

I've NEVER worn my whites/blues in a non-US port before, even in some US ports I wouldn't wear them.

Wearing your uniform puts a big target on your back these days. They even changed the rules for official travel to avoid standing out, especially through non-US routes.

but typically you wear civvies in domestic ports, and cracker jacks or working uniform in foreign ports if so ordered, but I can count on one hand how many times we were told to wear our dress uniforms in any ports and I have been to 16 different countries.
And as far as the E-4 thing, Twiddgets, yes, typically get those handed to them after A-School, Snipes and other rates have it harder, and I got alot of enjoyment of beating that Crow on some new E-4....well, you gotta to make sure it...

Got another question for you guys. I see when they go out on liberty no one is wearing their uniform. Is that something they are not alloud to wear on libert? Or is that just a choice that is left to each individual?

Besides, there is a process whereby you can petition to have your discharge upgraded one step after 3-5 years. When I was dealing with that kind of thing in 1986 (TAD to HQ squadron, MCAS El Toro), somewhere around 2/3 of such petitions were being approved.

I expect him to soon have a new DD-214 saying "General (Administrative) Discharge under Honorable Conditions".

My job requires a Security Clearance and we don't base it on a DD 214. There are so many ways to get discharged administratively and we really don't care. We check DD 214s to ensure people passed the service schools that they claim on their resume, and obviously for Veterans Preference. You do need an Honorable Discharge to get maximum points for that. Security Clearances have their own investigation and usually they're checking for stuff that you could potentially be blackmailed...

I know what you mean their are a lot of differences from the small boys as well, but with 5000 people on board and more officers than the entire crew of 2 DDG's you are not going to know everyone on the ship like you would a sub or destroyer.

So far I've seen 4 episodes of this and it is surprisingly good, usually these shows are more about the ship, what it can do and usually they present a pretty glossy view of the USN with mostly officers talking.
